Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are common drugs used for gastritis, heartburn, ulcer disease etc.  The medications are popular because they improve symptoms very rapidly.

To assess the toxicity of PPIs by looking at >100k patients.

The authors of this study found that a large percentage of patients who was prescribed PPIs now had kidney problems.

In fact, a 96% increased risk of developing kidney failure was seen in those taking PPIs and a 28% increased risk of chronic kidney disease compared to the patients who took the histamine H2 receptor blockers.
