Curcumin is a substance extracted from turmeric, which is been used as a spice in Indian and Asian cuisine and also as medication against pain, cancer and blood clot formation. Curcumin has been a candidate to combat Alzheimer’s disease for a long time.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease, in which the brain’s nerve cells either die or somehow lose their function. Brain cells function is mainly sending signals to other parts of the body or store data in some of them (memory function). This will lead to loss of memory in Alzheimer’s patients. A certain protein called oligomer has one of the most dangerous effect on nerve cells in Alzheimer’s patients.

Aim

To assess if fruit flies with Alzheimer’s symptoms could improve with Curcumin.

Results/Conclusion

The study showed that 75% of fruit flies with Alzheimer’s symptoms, which were fed by Curcumin lived longer and had more activity than those sick flies who were not fed. The study showed that the turmuric-based drug reduces the formation of the harmful oligomers.

The Turmeric-based drug reduces the formation of the oligomers, which may positively affects the disease and may prevent Alzheimer’s.
