The Mediterranean diet (MD) is know to have many health benefits.  Now, the association to brain volume has been determined.

To assess whether the MD may have any effect on the brain.

Two groups were assinged, one which more closer aligned with eating a MD diet and one that did not. The MD group was found to have a larger total brain volume on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, the eating fish and less meat was linked to positive effects on brain structure, the researchers found.

“Among older adults, MD adherence was associated with less brain atrophy, with an effect similar to five years of aging. Higher fish and lower meat intake might be the 2 key food elements that contribute to the benefits of MD on brain structure.”
